The SFMA is a movement based diagnostic system that physical therapists use to determine the root cause of pain, by breaking down dysfunctional movement patterns within a patient's body. Restorative Pilates is a teaching method that blends preparatory exercises often seen in the contemporary Pilates teaching approach, the teaching strategies and core Pilates principles often seen in the classical Pilates teaching approach with mobility exercises inspired by modern day biomechanics and research on core efficiency.
Restorative Pilates honors Joseph Pilates goal of returning the human body back to "normal health" through complete coordination of mind, body, and spirit, as Joseph referred to as "Contrology". The movement sequence of Restorative Pilates re-trains the fundamental movement patterns we need in our body to properly connect the diaphragm, pelvic floor, and core and ultimately help the client to restore a healthier, more functional, efficient body!
In Restorative Pilates, we honor "the breath", a person's very first pattern of movement. The breath is the first action we do when we come out of the womb, and one of Joseph's founding principles of his Method. Functional movement patterns that our bodies' need to automatically activate our core are a main focus in this teaching method. In addition to Joseph Pilates original mat work, the Restorative Pilates Method uses mobility exercises inspired by Feldenkrais, pioneers in the physical therapy field, and functional movement specialists to restore movement and lengthen and strengthen your body.
